About Us

Celebrating 30 years serving the community! (1993-2023)

Oakton Christian Preschool (OCP) is a developmentally appropriate play-based preschool program for children ages 2 1/2 years through Pre-K. We welcome all denominations and religions in a safe, loving, and nurturing environment.

Welcome to Oakton Christian Preschool

In our play-based environment, we believe that children learn best when they are invited to explore, create, and imagine. Instead of rote memorization and didactic recitation, our students engage in purposeful play—an approach that transforms the sensory table into a physics lesson and a dress-up corner into a masterclass in empathy and social negotiation. By following their natural curiosities, children develop a lifelong love for learning and the confidence to ask "why?"

Why Play-Based Learning Works

Research shows that PLAY is the work of childhood, and that the whole child is best developed through active, hands-on experiences that give children the freedom to experiment and the safety to fail. This allows them to develop into resilient, creative, intrinsically motivated thinkers who are ready for kindergarten and beyond. Our approach aims to combine the four pillars of early childhood success:

Cognitive Development

We put a lot of thought into planning our weekly themes, incorporating it into our story time books, art projects, science activities, exploratory materials, toy rotation, and in-house field trips. We believe that real-world observations and experimenting with materials provide deeper understanding and a genuine love of learning than worksheets ever could.

Social-Emotional Growth

It is truly magical watching our students make friends and learn to collaborate with each other. Students quickly pick up problem-solving skills, such as taking turns, following social cues, self-regulating and managing their emotions.

Language & Literacy

Through music class, imaginative role-play and engaging story times, students expand their vocabularies and language skills instead of rote memorization.

Physical Coordination

Playground time helps develop fine and gross motor skills in a natural, high-energy setting. Our students truly feel like they are part of a community, as they engage in mixed-age play.

Why OCP?

Small Class Sizes

With a low student to teacher ratio, OCP is able to provide an exceptional learning environment that builds the foundation for a lifelong love of learning. Our teacher to student ratio is set at a maximum of 1:6 for all classrooms. Some classes have a 1:5 ratio.

Kindermusik

Our Music and Movement program, "ABC Music and Me", was developed by Kindermusik International (TM) and has been designed specifically for preschools. The children attend a weekly class and families receive access to online content for at home use.

In-House Field Trips

Students enjoy a variety of in-house field trips including visits from the fire department, the police department, a local dental office, the animal hospital, My Pet Alpaca, the VRE, and special programs offered by Hidden Oaks Nature Center including: Owls-Flying Tigers of the Night; Senses! That Makes Sense; Spring Changes: Plants and Animals; and Eastern Woodland Indians- A Child's Life.

After School Enrichment

We offer a variety of after school enrichment programs for an additional cost that extend the school day until 1:15pm. Programs include: Lunch Bunch, Excite Soccer, Mindful Moving Kids Yoga, Zumba Kids, STEAM, Spanish, and more. Enrichment classes vary each semester (fall, winter, spring).

Small Community Feel

OCP accepts a maximum of 52 students each year. Our small size lends itself to a tight-knit community. Our preschool families are also warmly welcomed at Oakton United Methodist Church (Oakton UMC) events, including: Trunk-or-Treat, Christmas Tree Lighting & Cookies with Santa, the Pancake Supper, Easter Eggstravaganza, Vacation Bible School, and more.

Chapel Time

We have Chapel Time with Pastor Chan Suh from Oakton UMC every week. During Chapel Time, Pastor Chan teaches about Christian values and we sing songs.

OCP: A ministry of Oakton UMC

Oakton Christian Preschool has been serving the local communities of Oakton, Vienna, and Fairfax for over 30 years! The preschool is a ministry of Oakton United Methodist Church (Oakton UMC). All are welcome. http://oaktonumc.org/
